Parasomnias Parasomnias are disorders of waking and/or sleep stage transition; their symptoms can take a variety of forms, the most common of which are sleepwalking (somnambulism) and sleep talking. While less common than other sleep disorders, parasomnias can be bizarre and frightening to both patients and their families. Fortunately, these disorders can be mild and do not always require medical attention. Sleepwalking and sleep talking tend to run in families and frequently occur in times of stress. Affected children often outgrow these tendencies. Some severe parasomnias can
result in injury or violence to the patient or the patient's bed partner.
In addition, some neurological disorders such as epilepsy may appear to
resemble sleepwalking or sleep talking. In such instances, medical treatment
involving medications and/or counseling may be necessary.
