Sleep-Related Medical Disorders
Few things in life seem as easy as sleeping: you lie down, close your eyes, and after a few dream-filled hours awake feeling relaxed and refreshed. Most people don't realize, however, that sleep is a very complex phenomenon that involves itself in every aspect of our physiology and psychology. When we sleep, we do not simply turn off our bodies and brains. Many physiological changes that occur in sleep are important for optimal physical and mental functioning. For example, there is evidence that we need quality sleep to learn properly. Additionally, many studies suggest that getting sufficient sleep results in faster recovery times from injury and illness. A good night's sleep is vital to feeling and functioning well, but it can be difficult to obtain for many people. People experience sleep disorders for many reasons. These reasons can be as simple as poor sleep habits, or “sleep hygiene,” or as serious as life threatening medical problems, and it is important to distinguish among them.
