Pulmonary Function Testing Pulmonary function testing is done to assist in the diagnosis of specific lung disorders. Patients are usually referred for such testing if they have signs or symptoms of lung disease, including (but not limited to) shortness of breath at rest or with exercise. Pulmonary function testing is often performed in the evaluation and monitoring of asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease (usually caused by smoking), interstitial lung disease (which can be caused by excessive exposure to certain small particles, such as dusts, toxic aerosols, coal, and asbestos), and certain neuromuscular diseases. Such testing provides invaluable information not only for pulmonary medicine specialists but also for neurologists, cardiologists, and primary care physicians involved in the day-to-day care of patients with breathing difficulty.
